Broadway Spectacular

When. planning a trip to New York City, without a doubt one of the must-sees is to visit the Broadway theater district. Located in the heart of Manhattan, between 40th and 54th streets and between Sixth and Eighth Avenues, it is one of the most famous streets in New York.

Broadway was an old colonial road, and is the only street that still runs completely through Manhattan from north to south.

Like the city of New York, and at the beginning of the 17th century, the Broadway area was designed by the Dutch, it is there where they settled for many years, until the arrival of the English colonies.

Around the year 1811, the city of New York was part of a project called the “Commissioner Plan”, which had the objective of developing the great cities of the United States.

Part of this plan was for New York to establish itself on the land where a large hacienda called “Vía Ancha” had previously been located, which translated into English means Broadway.

The Manhattan area was created in order to receive a large number of people and inhabitants, with Broadway being the street that is divided into two parts through the island. Already by the middle of the 17th century, cultural development began with the formation of stages to present plays. At the same time, musical concerts began to develop, especially in the Gospel style and the first Jazz performers, these shows began to be presented on Broadway, which made this street begin to develop since they were full of people daily.

By the end of the 19th century, the Broadway stage was near Time Square, and by 1880 many theater companies had moved to Broadway.

The first musical to which there is reference was called “The Black Crook”, which was first presented in September 1866 and lasted 5 hours.

Broadway’s well-known golden age was established between the 1930s and 1960s, with plays like Carousel (1945), The Sound Music (1947) and Hello Dolly (1950).

The following years, between the 1980s and 1990s, and with the arrival of special effects films, the theater experienced a slight decline; however, the Broadway circuit survived this influence and was able to maintain itself until the next century.

Currently, everyone who visits the Big Apple includes at least one visit to this famous avenue in their itinerary, whether it is to attend a musical or another show. Some of them have been performing every day for decades, such as The Phantom of the Opera, but the best musicals that exist have passed through there and have always existed.

In total there are 40 professional theaters forming part of Broadway and all are located in the famous Theater District of Manhattan.

All Broadway musicals are spectacular, they have great productions with top-class and world-renowned actors. However, there are some that stand out. They have been on the bill for years, astonishing thousands of spectators every night.

Some of the best are:
