Why Did Trump Build Trump Tower?
Trump purchased a small 11-story property in 1979 with the vision of creating Manhattan’s very first super-luxury high rise that included both high-end retail shops and residential units. To make his vision come to life, Trump hired famed-American architect Der Scutt. Der Scutt was born Donald Clark Scutt. Other notable buildings designed by Der Scutt are One Astor Plaza, Grand Hyatt New York, and Continental Center. His work on Trump Tower helped land him on The New York Times Magazine cover featuring New York City master architects.
Opening day, Trump Tower included five floors of retail space and an atrium with a 60-foot water wall. To this day, Trump Tower also provides some of New York City’s most luxurious public bathrooms, a rare commodity in midtown Manhattan!
How Tall is Trump Tower?
Trump Tower is 664 feet tall, making it the 107th tallest in NYC. To be clear, there are a LOT of buildings in NYC, and considering it was completed in 1982, when most of the city’s current tallest buildings weren’t even imagined, is quite a feat!
Trump Tower boasts 58 floors, though some, including Donald Trump, insist the official count should be 68, because the atrium should be counted as 10 floors. Therefore the top floor of Trump Tower is marked as 68.
