According to a new study from Wallethub, when it comes to Halloween, there’s no better place to hunt for apples and collect pounds of candy than the Big Apple.
New York City took the top prize this year, with San Francisco in second place and Miami in third place in the standings. The study based its metrics on three main criteria: trick-or-treating friendliness, Halloween fun, and Halloween weather.
New York also ranked number one in total Halloween stores per capita and candy/chocolate stores per capita.
Dr. Martha Buell, professor and CEI Senior Fellow for Engaged Scholarships at the University of Delaware, said that with this increased spending may come a learning opportunity for young children.
“In many places, pumpkins are sold on a per pound basis. Pointing out how weight is connected to measurement is a learning opportunity. Involving children in purchasing decisions and making the decision-making process transparent is always a good idea,” said Dr. Buell.
Halloween spending in 2022 is expected to average $100 per person, according to WalletHub.
“Halloween has become a holiday for adults, similar to New Year’s Eve. Along with this comes the availability of elaborate decorations and costumes that can be expensive,” said Dr. Buell.
The best thing is to schedule a themed trip to New York, which allows us to enjoy one of the scariest and funniest parties in equal parts. So, once we’ve seen its views and green spaces, and even visited the places where our favorite series were filmed (such as Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment), it’s time to walk around New York City, having a ‘pumpkin spice latte’ and living the Halloween experience to the fullest.
Many parades that are organized in New York are famous thanks to the television series with which we have grown up. This makes them all on our lists of things we want to see and places we want to be at least once in a lifetime. You can’t be in New York on Halloween and miss the Village Halloween Parade.
This is the most important Halloween parade and it is also one of the most notable activities related to this festival in the city. Sixth Avenue is filled with music, lights and, above all, the most varied costumes. It usually starts in the middle of the afternoon, so you better choose a good place with a little time to see it. If you have not been able to square the dates, do not be upset, about a week before there are parades and Halloween contests for dogs; They are organized in different parks around the city and there is no doubt that they are the most adorable.
One of the most typical activities of Halloween, with the permission of the ‘trick or treat’ is to carve a pumpkin. Something that seems incredibly simple when we see the ease with which they do it in series and movies, but in reality it has its own, so if you want to carve yours, we recommend doing it carefully.
It’s also a good idea to visit a ‘pumpkin patch’, or a field where they grow and pick pumpkins. If your plan is to move around the area, there are many on the outskirts of the city, but, as we say, it is necessary to take the car. In New York itself there are also some pumpkin patches, but they are smaller.
Whether you have your carved pumpkin and want to compare or are looking for inspiration, you can’t miss the Jack O’Lantern Festival, an impressive exhibition with hundreds of carved pumpkins, from the simplest designs to the most elaborate sculptures. A play of lights that is worthwhile, which is celebrated in the Hudson Valley and for which it is necessary to have purchased the ticket in advance.
Famous is the legend of the headless horseman, protagonist of Irving’s novel, but known above all thanks to Hollywood and the film starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. This town puts all the meat on the grill on Halloween and nothing better than spending a little of our time in New York to make an excursion to this place. Stroll through its streets, visit its cemetery and its church.
If you’re in New York at this time of year, you can’t go back without visiting a haunted house.
Those enchanted houses or ‘haunted houses’ are very typical of this time of year and are all over the city. They are a kind of tunnel of terror, in which you find actors, monsters and, above all, scares, as you walk in the dark, some of the most famous are Blood Manor, on Broadway, or The Gravesesd Inn, which is actually a haunted hotel.
