How to buy Broadway tickets

It’s official now that the chartbuster musicals, plays, and other live shows have returned and the Great White Way is back in business. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is allowing theaters to reopen for live performances starting from 14th September.

Due to multiple options, buying Broadway show tickets may be daunting. However, a little planning in advance makes it easier to buy Broadway tickets and secure coveted seats to some of the most successful shows

BROADWAY TICKETS

Some of the popular ways to buy tickets to enjoy live Broadway performances are:

  • Tickets via the Web
www.Broadway.org, the official online seat for Broadway information source is the best place to buy Broadway tickets. Here you will find a complete listing of current and upcoming Broadway shows. It will also provide direct links to the official ticketing offices of each show and theatre that are offering tickets at all price points.
  • Head to TKTS Discount Booths
Waiting in line on the day of the show is the traditional and classic way to buy deeply discounted tickets at TKTS in Duffy Square. The biggest Broadway hits are on sale on the booths mostly at 50 percent off. Time Square booth also has a “Play Express” window that cuts down wait time provided you do not want to see a musical.

TDF also operates two other booths in the city. The first one is at Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium and the other at South Street Seaport. The earlier you buy the tickets at TKTS the better, but sometimes the blocks of good seats are released closer to curtain time. For updated information, you can use the TKTS app or visit its website. The tickets fee at TKTS is substantially lower than the fee on other websites.

  • Buy tickets online or on your phone
Buying at TKTS requires you to wait in person and often the wait is for a long time. Internet is the best alternative that will help you to buy tickets weeks in advance. TodayTix app will help you to found discounted tickets on your mobile phone well in advance.

Moreover, there are two ticket vendors also who are used by almost all Broadway theatres to sell tickets online or via phone. One is Telecharge at (800) 432-7250 and the other one is Ticketmaster at (866) 870-2717.

“Rush” or “lottery” tickets
Many theaters offer special same-day rush tickets at a very reasonable price for shows that have been sold out. Rush tickets for Broadway shows can be bought for as low as $20 per ticket. They can be bought at the theater’s box office on the day of the performance. Some theaters offer mobile rushes through TodayTix also.

A few productions offer cheap day-of tickets through the in-person lottery method. The names are drawn at the box office a few hours before curtain time. However, now most of the Broadway shows conduct lotteries digitally through TodayTix or on their own. You can consult the handy listings at Broadway for Broke People to find out which theaters offer rush tickets and lotteries.

  • Become a member
Most theater companies offer membership packages. You can pay a fee upfront and in return will get discounted tickets all year. This also allows you to buy tickets before they go on sale. It is very helpful when theaters have shows with a lot of advance buzz. You can also get annual membership with TDF. It will let you use ticket deals well in advance.
  • Bonus: For youth
The nonprofit theaters have programs that encourage younger audiences. By joining the Hiptix program, people aged between 18 and 40 can buy tickets at Roundabout Theater Company just for $30. LincTix program of Lincoln Center Theater for youngsters aged between 21 and 35 offers tickets at $32 for all shows. Similarly, Manhattan Theatre Club offers tickets at $30 for patrons who are 35 or younger.
