St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York

St. Patrick’s Cathedral was originally built on Mulberry Street in Lower Manhattan, in what is now the Nolita neighborhood, but when in 1983 the cathedral began to grow too small to accommodate so many devotees, they found themselves in need of move. This new cathedral had to be much bigger and the head of the project, Archbishop Hughes, decided to relocate it to Uptown since he envisioned that part of New York City would become the nerve center of the city.

The Basilica of St Patrick’s Old Cathedral is still in operation and can be visited for free during opening hours as if it were any church. But there is a part that is not accessible to the public: the catacombs, a set of crypts built in 1815 where everything from bishops to prominent New York families lie.

The new St Patrick’s Cathedral became New York’s Catholic parish church and the city’s most iconic religious building. The New York Minster has also housed a music school since 1929.

Among the large number of events of which it has been the scene are the ordination of the first cardinal in the United States, the visit of Saint John Paul II in 1979 and the services held after the attacks of September 11.

The funerals of Robert F. Kennedy and the singer Celia Cruz were also held here, as well as the weddings of personalities such as Frances Scott Fitzgerald with her wife Zelda.

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral was declared a National Monument in 1976 and receives more than five million tourists every year.

In addition, it has been the setting for several films: Ghostbusters, The Godfather, The Age of Innocence and Glee, among others.

Since 2017, the Cathedral has an innovative air conditioning system hidden under the floor of the cathedral.
