Swim in NYC’s East River: +POOL Set for 2026

Something very interesting is coming to the Big Apple. And it is expected that, starting in 2026, both tourists and New Yorkers will be able to enjoy a unique experience: swimming in none other than New York’s iconic East River thanks to the new floating pool called +POOL. This structure, which will be built at Pier 35 near Manhattan’s Lower East Side, promises to become one of the city’s newest and most sustainable attractions.

The pool, designed by the PlayLab Inc. studio, will not only allow visitors to cool off and have lots of fun, but will also clean the river water through an advanced filtration system. This innovative system processes almost 3.8 million liters of water per day without the need for chemicals, ensuring a safe and ecological environment for swimmers. Although the first tests will be carried out in 2025, the pool will not open to the public until 2026, when all the necessary safety tests have been completed.

A little history of the East River

The East River, which is a strait and not a river, has played a fundamental role in the history of New York. It connects New York Harbor to Long Island Sound and has been a crucial route for trade and shipping since the early days of the Dutch colony in the 17th century. However, its importance is not limited to the economic sphere; It has been the scene of various urban transformations over the years.

At the beginning of the 20th century, rapid industrial development and population growth had a negative impact on water quality, leading to the ban on bathing in its waters. This ban lasted for decades, turning the East River into a symbol of urban pollution. The +POOL floating pool represents an attempt to reverse that history and return the river to its role as an accessible and clean space for all.

East River and the cinema

The East River has been a frequent setting in many films. Appearing in numerous films that capture the essence of New York. From thrillers like The Dark Knight Rises to romantic dramas like Annie Hall, the river has witnessed iconic scenes in cinema. Its rugged appearance and the majesty of the bridges that cross it have served as a backdrop for crucial moments on the big screen. Without a doubt, the possibility of swimming in its waters adds a new chapter to its cinematographic history, which will allow us to capture a different and more positive side of this emblematic site.

Recommended places to eat and walk in the area

The area surrounding Pier 35 and the Lower East Side is varied in both dining and walking options. For those looking to enjoy a post-swim meal, there are a variety of restaurants in the area. From the historic Katz’s Delicatessen, famous for its pastrami, to Dirt Candy, an innovative vegetarian restaurant, the dining options are diverse and exciting.

Additionally, the Lower East Side is known for its interesting nightlife and cultural venues. The Tenement Museum offers a fascinating look at the history of immigration in New York, while the East River Park is perfect for those who prefer a relaxing walk along the riverfront.

Without a doubt, the +POOL will be one of the great attractions to enjoy during the summer, when warm temperatures make a dip in the river even more tempting. On the other hand, for tourists it is an interesting place since they can take advantage and explore the area: The Brooklyn Bridge, which is located a short distance away, offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and is an excellent place to take photographs.

A swimming pool at the request of citizens

The creation of +POOL is the result of a community effort that began more than a decade ago. From its conception in 2010 by a group of young designers, to raising funds through Kickstarter campaigns, this project has been driven by the desire of New Yorkers to reclaim their waterways. In 2017, a campaign called Swim in the River gathered more than 10,000 signatures to support the project, which led to the attention of authorities and ultimately its approval.

The pool will not only be a place of recreation, but also a symbol of the power of the community to transform its environment. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the final contribution of $16 million to the project in 2024, ensuring that the floating pool will be ready for its inauguration in 2026.
