Titanic Sites in NYC

April 15, 1912, the great ship, the RMS Titanic, sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage. Over 1500 souls perished, many of them New Yorkers. The Titanic’s final destination was New York City, afterall. There are numerous Titanic memorials throughout New York City. Visiting these NYC Titanic memorials will give you a greater understanding of the ship’s impact, as well as who was aboard.

Where did the Titanic Survivors Dock in NYC?

The survivors of the Titanic were rescued by the RMS Carpathia. Titanic was owned by White Star Line. Had the Titanic made it to NYC, it would have docked near what we know today as Chelsea Piers. The Carpathia was owned by Cunard Line. Cunard Line owned docks near what we know today as Little Island.

There is a NYC Titanic artifact just in front of Little Island. As you approach Little Island, you will notice a large rusty arch. If you look really closely, you will see in very faded letters it says Cunard White Star. This arch mentions both companies because later they would merge into one. The Titanic survivors would have docked in NYC near Little Island, and then walked through this rusty arch, which was then part of the ship terminal’s infrastructure. If you pass through, you are literally walking in the footsteps of the Titanic survivors.

It is worth noting that some of Titanic’s lifeboats did arrive in NYC with the Carpathia. They were dropped off at the White Star terminal.

If you visit Chelsea Piers, they have historical photos on the walls, outlining the history of the Titanic. Anyone interested in the Titanic must visit the NYC Titanic site.

Where Were the Names of Titanic Survivors Posted in NYC?

The Morning of April 15, 1912, all eyes were on White Star Line’s New York offices. White Star Line’s were located directly west of Bowling Green Park, in a complex known as the Bowling Green Offices. As news of Titanic survivors was confirmed, names would be posted at the White Star Line’s NYC offices. You can only imagine both the heartbreak and cries of joy as names were listed. The tension in the crowd was palpable. The Bowling Green Offices still stand, and currently are home to a NYC DMV office. Even most local New Yorkers are surprised to learn of the NYC Titanic site.

Titanic Memorial Lighthouse

The entire nation mourned the sinking of the Titanic. A nationwide effort quickly went underway to raise money for a Titanic memorial in NYC. Everyone from the Vanderbilt family to school children donated what they could. The memorial that took shape was a memorial lighthouse that was placed atop the Seamen’s Church Institute. On top of the lighthouse was a nautical time ball, similar to the New Year’s Eve ball that drops in Times Square each year. This specific time ball dropped daily at the stroke of noon. It was so accurate that local New Yorkers would set their clocks by it.

Sadly, the Seamen’s Church institute was demolished, but the lighthouse was saved. Today, you can visit the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse at the South Street Seaport. However, the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse is currently undergoing much-needed renovation, so it’s under scaffolding. The work is expected to be completed at the end of 2025. Once the renovation is complete, you’ll be able to fully enjoy this restored NYC Titanic Site.

Wireless Operators Memorial

Battery Park is home to a secret NYC Titanic Site. This is the wireless operators memorial, dedicated to all the wireless operators who lost their lives at sea. One name you will of course recognize if you’re a Titanic enthusiast is Jack Phillips, the Titanic’s wireless operator. He stayed at his post until the last possible moment, giving the Carpathia directions. It’s said without his persistence, there may have been no Titanic survivors. He died a true hero.

If there’s hero in your life you want to celebrate, shout out their heroic deeds on our giant Times Square Billboard for all the world to see!
