9-11 anniversary in NYC

9/11 commemorates the 22nd anniversary of the sad attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. There were several attacks on the United States during that year and on that date 4 planes were hijacked, two of them crashed into the Twin Towers in New York, another in the Pentagon and another in a field in Pennsylvania.

In all, almost 3,000 people lost their lives in these gruesome attacks on the World Trade Center. Today, the names of the victims are etched in bronze in the two fountains that form the nerve center of the 9/11 National Memorial. The north and south fountains are built in exactly the same place where the iconic Twin Towers once stood.

These two large fountains are surrounded by trees, including the Survival Tree, which was the only tree in the area to survive the attacks, and is considered a living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth.

Next to the Memorial is the 9/11 Museum. This museum is located underground, where you can see parts of the original columns of the Twin Towers, the objects of the victims recovered from the rubble, testimonies from the survivors and, above all, the stairs by which hundreds of people tried to flee to save their lives during chaos. In the museum there are even the remains of a fire truck that participated in the rescue work that fateful day.

During the reconstruction of Ground Zero, new skyscrapers were built that make up the current World Trade Center. The most famous building is One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower. This is not only the tallest building in New York, but it is also the tallest in the United States and in the entire Western Hemisphere.

The truth is that this day for Americans is not a day like any other. The city is transformed into a place full of history and memories. Throughout the country, flags are flown at half-mast in honor of the victims. The president also announces a minute of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

This day there will usually be several ceremonies in the churches located near the area of ​​the attacks and also the World Trade Center is filled with tributes to the victims and relatives who leave flowers in the ponds.

At sunset, two large beams of light cross the sky creating the shape of the missing Twin Towers, a projection known as Tribute in Light.

This light event is a respectful and emotional tribute that honors the victims of the terrorist attacks against the twin towers. It was performed for the first time 6 months after the attacks, and they started doing it every year on the anniversary date.

The Tribute in Light is a light installation of 88 reflectors that projects two huge beams of blue light that create two vertical columns that represent the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The Homage in Light is lit on September 11 from 6:00 p.m. until dawn the following day.



Mounted on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage south of the 9/11 Memorial, the lightning bolts reach a height of about 4 miles (6.4 km) into the sky and can be seen from a radius of approximately 60 miles (95 kilometers).

Tribute in Light was conceived by various artists and designers who then came together under the auspices of the Municipal Art Society and Creative Time.

Another way in which the city pays homage is through the lighting of the most emblematic buildings. The Empire State Building, for example, is lit up in the colors of the American flag in commemoration of 9/11.

Many firefighters and police officers usually come to participate in the commemoration event. One of the meeting points is the O’Hara’s Pub, near the World Trade Center. It starts early in the morning and is a very special place to go for a drink for those who are in the Big Apple on 9/11.
