Easter in New York
Easter in New York
There is no better plan than to enjoy Easter in New York, and it is that during those days you can take advantage of it to live some of the most interesting parties that New Yorkers celebrate throughout the year.
Because Easter is not an official holiday, most attractions, shops, and restaurants open as normal (except those that are usually closed on Sundays). However, it is suggested that you always check each website before making plans.
In 2023, Holy Week in New York is celebrated from April 2 to 9, with Palm Sunday on the 2nd and Easter Sunday on the 9th.
Here are a few ideas and activities for those visiting New York City during Easter:
- Easter Parade & Bonnet Festival
On Easter Sunday (April 9, 2023) – between 10 am and 4 pm – 5th avenue between 49th and 57th streets are closed for the Easter parade known as the Easter Bonnet Parade. It is a hilarious parade of Easter hats where whoever so wishes can parade with their headdress or hat.
This traditional New York Festival and Parade dates to the 1870s when men and women dressed in their finest to attend the Easter celebration in churches and as a symbol of renewal of life.
During the first decades it was a fashionable and religious event. But, over the years, the celebration was transformed into this colorful carnival and a show of extravagant outfits and hats.
Today, New Yorkers come from all over to wear extravagant hats and accessories of all kinds, most of them handmade: from hats with bunnies and Easter eggs to other more elegant or peculiar ones. There are also music bands that liven up the atmosphere so that the most energetic New Yorkers start dancing.
A good place to view the event is around St. Patrick’s Cathedral, between 50th and 51st streets.
Without a doubt, it is one of the most curious traditions in the city!
2.Easter Egg Hunt
The tradition consists of hiding eggs with gifts inside, or chocolates in indoor or outdoor places, and where children must hurry to collect as many eggs of certain characteristics as possible.
For example, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan hosts an egg hunt every year, an egg hunt and clues through the museum throughout the weekend.
Then, there are other museums and stores, like Camp, that also often organize activities. - Attend the Easter mass
One of the must-see activities is to attend one of the Easter masses at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. There are 8 performances, and all are open to the public except for 10:15 a.m. for which an entrance ticket is required.
4. Enjoy a gospel mass in Harlem
A great experience for anyone visiting New York City is attending a gospel mass in Harlem.
Formerly Harlem was full of theaters and dance halls, today the vast majority have been converted into Baptist churches where there is live gospel on Sundays.
5. See cherry blossoms
During the month of April, New York’s cherry trees and fruit trees burst into bloom, making it an ideal time to enjoy the beautiful landscapes in parks and gardens.
Some of the favorite places to see the cherry blossoms are:
-Roosevelt Island: (especially the western section of the island)
-Brooklyn Botanical Garden and the New York Botanical Garden.
-Hunter’s Point South Park, in Queens.
-Central Park around the lake
-The Flushing Meadows Corona Park, in Queens.
- Brooklyn Bridge Stations of the Cross Procession
It is a procession headed by a simple wooden cross.
Departs from St. James Church in Brooklyn (250 Cathedral Place), crosses the Bridge and continues through Downtown Manhattan to Ground Zero.
This procession was held for the first time in 1996 and that year only 30 people attended. To this day there are thousands who participate in this tradition.
It is celebrated on Good Friday (April 7 from 10:00 a.m.).
7. Rockefeller Center Easter Decoration
