But there is something that, without a doubt, is perhaps one of the best plans when traveling to the Big Apple, and we are talking about living the gospel experience.
The word Gospel derives from the word “Godspell” which means word of God referring to the gospels of the Bible.
Since the 17th century, many African communities have been forcibly brought to the United States. With them they brought their traditions and their music with strong rhythms, a very important part of this tradition. This Afro-American population suffered the suffering of slavery while discovering a new evangelical religion and incorporating its music into the ritual. Through singing, freedom has been sought from the oppression that these communities experienced every day.
Gospel music became very popular in the 1930s and the rite of the Mass began to be called the Gospel Mass.
In Harlem there is the largest concentration of Baptist churches and its main characteristic is that a large part of the mass or worship is sung by spectacular choirs.
