Hidden streets with history of New York
Hidden streets with history of New York
Thanks in part to the film industry, New York City became one of the favorite places to visit in the United States. It is enough to walk through its streets, its parks to find surprises on each side. A place full of stimuli that make it difficult to choose where to look first, the lights, its impressive skyscrapers, its people and the rhythm of the city… make the Big Apple a place that must be visited at least once in a lifetime and there are several secret places that are worth knowing.
Stone street
This is a small street tucked between buildings just two minutes from Wall Street and north of Battery Park.
This street already existed when the Big Apple was the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, and the story goes that its name comes from the fact that it was the first paved street in the city.
The nearest tube to get to is Bowling Green (4, 5), Wall St (2, 3) or Whitehall St (N, R).
There you can find this pedestrian street with its striking cobblestones that, despite the passage of time and thanks to an urban planning intervention, retains its 17th century roots. In Stone Street the houses are low and in the summer months, it is common to find that the restaurants and pubs (which previously served as merchants’ warehouses) take their tables outside which add a fun atmosphere. During the winter the street seems deserted, but the atmosphere remains behind doors.
It is worth visiting because it is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque streets in the financial district.
Sylvan Terrace
In the north of Manhattan in the Washington Heights neighborhood, this unique and special place is hidden. Located next to the emblematic Morris-Jumel mansion, it is a cobbled street that takes those who visit it to travel back in time. There you can find identical and colorful wooden houses that have been fully restored but were built in 1882.
Some series have been filmed there, such as Boardwalk Empire.
Gay Street
Located to the west of 6th Avenue, between Christopher St and Waverly Pl, Gay Street is a very emblematic street for the fight for LGBTQ rights, but this has no relation to the name of its street. The story goes that the street was named like that since it was the last name of an inhabitant of the block who lived there centuries ago.
Washington Mews
It is one of the most beautiful streets in New York without a doubt and despite being a few meters from Washington Square, it often goes unnoticed.
There we can find a charming, closed street surrounded by stables and houses built between 1829 and 1833.
At present this street belongs to the NYU university and is private, but during the day it is open for anyone to visit.
Pomander Walk
Located in the Upper West Side neighborhood between Broadway and West End Avenue. On this street you can find a cooperative complex made up of 27 buildings in total.
The place is named after the 1910 romantic comedy Pomander Walk and was built in 1921. In 2009 the complex underwent a complete renovation.
Only residents have a key to this gated community, so no entry to explore. The street is private and not open to the public, but from its bars you can see inside.
Doyers Street
This street is only 61 meters long and is in the Chinatown neighborhood. It has a single block and a closed corner in its middle. It is one of the few curved streets in Manhattan and has a charming atmosphere
Long ago, this small and star Chinatown Street became very popular and was known as Bloody Angle or Murder Alley, where street fights were frequent between rival Chinese gangs who fought for control of various criminal activities in the area. It was also a meeting place for opium smokers and other activities such as prostitution.
The street is named in honor of Hendrik Doyer, a Dutch immigrant who ran a distillery there in the 18th century.
Today, there are Chinese businesses of all kinds, barbershops, the famous dim sum restaurant Nom Wah Tea Parlor, and restaurants and nightclubs.
In the cinema you can find several references to this street. One of the films that best portrays her is “Gangs of New York” by Martin Scorsese. So does “The Godfather.”
