Immersive experiences in New York
Instagrammable moments, or should we say “immersive experiences” at New York’s interactive museums, are taking over the Big Apple. Whether located in a temporary space, a museum, or a major retail store, these photographs are tremendously beautiful and fabulously fun to visit. There’s the selfie-friendly Color Factory, the avant-garde art site ARTECHOUSE, and offbeat selections like the immersive art of INTER_. Each of these fantastic museums and experiences will make great fodder for your Insta feed, only in the endlessly photographable city of New York.
Located in the former Lower Manhattan Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank, Hall des Lumières brings the Beaux-Arts landmark back to life with cutting-edge mapping technology. Chagall is now on display, Paris – New York, dedicated to the unclassifiable artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985). The exhibition shows Chagall’s entire career based on the capitals of modern art, Paris and New York, which represented two crucial stages in his artistic life. Beyond painting, Chagall’s work in theater, costume, sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, mosaics and collage are part of the digital immersion here. The projections are complemented by inspirations such as klezmer, jazz and classical music. Also on display: Kandinsky, The Odyssey of Abstraction, with art by Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), and Infinite Horizons, an artistic journey through the landscape co-created by the Parisian creative company HKI-Hellohikimori.
Head to Chelsea Market’s historic boiler house to experience the immersive ARTECHOUSE space, the original home of digital art in New York. You’ve never seen art like this before: room-sized digital projections merge with sound design to create a cinematic experience. You can ignite your imagination in the new show Beyond the Light, which opens up the invisible depths of our universe. Working in collaboration with NASA scientists, ARTECHOUSE brings innovative data to life through experiential storytelling. Beyond a tour of familiar images, this artistic experience uses the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence-assisted visual production, an original musical score created from galactic data, and impressive images and findings from the James Webb Space Telescope. Beautiful, educational and interactive, Beyond the Light is perfect for the whole family.
ARTECHOUSE’s next exhibition, arriving on December 1, is World of AI•magination. Human creativity meets artificial intelligence to produce a stunning piece of experiential, large-scale digital art. The program is a testament to the collaboration between human ingenuity and cutting-edge machine learning, involving the generation of more than one million unique data sets. The result, with its fascinating audiovisual components, is a poetic tribute to the eternal power of the imagination. 439 W. 15th St.
The energy at INTER_, Manhattan’s newest art experience, feels more like a meditation retreat than a typical gallery, and that’s by design.
The experiential, multi-sensory museum now open in Soho invites visitors to a heightened state of contemplative consciousness through a sound bath, light installations and aspects of meditation, all combined with interactive digital art. INTER_ opened in beta in November 2022 and refined the experience until its official opening on May 19, 2023.
After an orientation where you can share something you want to leave out, visitors ride a mind-blowing illuminated escalator. They’ll be handing out 3D glasses, which makes the lighting look even wilder.
Next, inside a massive dome called INTER_sensory, abstract digital art fills the walls with images that evoke natural phenomena such as earth, fire and water. A moving ambient soundtrack is combined with 360-degree projections that respond to visitors’ movements. At one point, bubbles even cascade from the ceiling. Audio cues offer a reminder to stay present: “Leave your worries behind,” a voice recites. “Remember to look around you and appreciate the small details of the world,” the voice encourages. Similar to a meditative experience, the audio track also encourages visitors to remain curious, be mindful, and let the views come and go.
Once you have reached the awakened state inside the dome, you will pass through a floral tunnel and enter a space with several interactive screens. In one titled Influence, for example, a sign says “you have authority over your own reality.” You can then press a button and watch your shape change on the screen.
Also don’t miss the infinity room and a water installation controlled by rotating crystal balls where you are encouraged to set an intention and use the powerful vibrations there to help manifest it.
Other activities include a cavernous volcano-like basement, a place to reflect on what you’re grateful for, a gong room where music plays while the floor vibrates, and finally, a bright white gallery space that explores the collective memory of the experience. There is also a photo booth, so you can take some pictures and take the memories with you.
The little details throughout the space really make the experience shine. For example, digital artwork is generative, meaning you will never see the same images twice, the INTER_ team explained.
Entering INTER_ from the busy intersection of Broadway and Canal is like entering another world, one calmer, gentler and, in fact, more joyful.
