MET GALA 2024 IN NYC

It’s already a tradition: Every first Monday in May, the fashion world stops to look at New York City, and this is where one of the most extravagant and glamorous events of the year takes place: the Met Gala.  This exclusive gala, organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in collaboration with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, is not only a fundraising event for the MET Costume Institute, but has also become a unparalleled fashion catwalk, where creativity, art and glamor merge in an unforgettable night.

Each year, the Met Gala marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibition, which typically features a specific theme that guides the style and creativity of attendees.

The highlight of the Met Gala is, without a doubt, the impressive list of guests who walk the red carpet in outfits designed exclusively for the occasion. From Hollywood stars to fashion icons, artists and influencers from various fields, the Met Gala brings together the best and brightest of the cultural scene.

The truth is that the Met Gala originated with conceptual and avant-garde ideas of art. Since the 70s, it has been transformed into a bastion where fame, the wealth of multimillion-dollar opulence, fashionism and political statements converge. Through fashion, opinions about ecclesiastical power, xenophobia, and LGBTQ rights were expressed. Yes: its mix of extravagance with richness and content is irresistible.

 Each year’s proposal

Every year, the Met Gala features a theme that inspires guests to dazzle in extravagant and creative outfits. From tributes to legendary designers to explorations of artistic and cultural movements, the gala’s theme serves as a blank canvas for individual expression and fashion experimentation.

This 2024, the proposal was based on the story of J.G. Ballard “The Garden of Time” from 1962 that addresses an environment that seems to move between a post-apocalyptic future and a fusion of historical eras, where a unique couple is located: Count Axel and the Countess, who are dedicated to the care of a mysterious garden. In this space, where time seems stopped, the caretakers protect and love the garden against the ravages of the calendar and the inexorable passage of time, which withers and wears everything down. In this idyllic paradise, crystal plants, known as the “flowers of time”, bloom.

Hand in hand with this unique theme, what happened this year once again demonstrated its importance in the world of fashion and art for followers of the sector.

At the 2024 Met Gala, Zendaya, Jennifer López, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny hosted the evening and not only were the typical extravagant outfits seen, but content generated by artificial intelligence was also introduced that showed absent artists in the event. These images, created by AI technology, managed to accurately capture the atmosphere and theme of this year’s gala.

Among the featured AI-generated content were deepfake images of Katy Perry, Rihanna and Dua Lipa. Despite their physical absence at the gala, these virtual representations showed the artists attending the event, surrounded by the characteristic bustle of photographers.

An image of Katy Perry that was completely generated by artificial intelligence, in which she appears wearing a dazzling pearl dress with three-dimensional flower details, has been especially popular, reaching more than 10 million views and generating a wave of comments on the networks, despite initial skepticism about its authenticity.

During the carpet broadcast, the eyes of photographers and social media users were fascinated by the dresses of Lana del Rey, Demi Lovato, Tyla, Kendall Jenner, Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, and other personalities.

However, there were also important absences: Selena Gómez, Katy Perry, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Jared Leto were some of the personalities who were missing.

The Met Gala is not only a high-profile fashion event, but it also has a significant impact on the global fashion industry. The outfits and trends presented at the gala often set the tone for seasons to come and serve as a source of inspiration for designers, stylists and fashion lovers around the world.
