Netflix has become one of the main protagonists in the war for streaming and of course has opted for the creation of series and many of them have managed to keep users on the edge of their seats, becoming the topic of conversation for weeks. .
Sex and the City was always more than a comedy. It was the television equivalent of a single friend who was desperate to tell his last terrible date, but who hoped that the right person was just around the corner. It’s also exactly the kind of energy that Darren Starr and Jeffrey Richman’s new Netflix comedy Unmatched delivers.
For the premise alone, it’s inevitable to compare And Just Like That and Mismatched. The sequel to Sex and the City revolves around a newly single Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) who has to navigate the dating world after Big’s (Chris North) death. While Michael’s (Neil Patrick Harris) single status isn’t all that sad, it puts him in the same boat as Carrie. It’s about two people who never thought they’d have to date again and now they’re drowning in the dating pool, and not in the funniest way. Chaos is served.
Mismatched channels those brunch vibes, albeit in a less trendy restaurant. Like the first seasons of Sex and the City, the series follows a group of friends – Michael, Billy (Emerson Brooks) and Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas) – as they go on a slew of dates. From the school teacher desperate to fast-track a relationship to the client flirting with both Michael and his business partner, each presents a lighthearted, carefree and laughable dating scenario. Yes, dating a man who keeps inviting himself to events is insufferable. That’s relatable no matter your age or sexual orientation.
Michael is our hopeless romantic Carrie; Billy, the sexually adventurous Samantha; and Stanley, the sarcastic and exaggerated Miranda. Excellent. Why mess with a tried and true formula? Throw in some fun supporting characters, like Tisha Campbell’s good-natured Suzanne and Marcia Gay Harden’s dashing Claire, and the dynamic feels like we’re back in the ’90s and early ’00s. seasons of Sex and the City, the era of the series that was too serious and ridiculous.
This is not to say that Unpaired is at the level of Sex and the City, because it isn’t at all. Starr’s original series remains the best for romantic comedies. But at least Mismatched feels like it wants to have fun while moving between dirty jokes and romance. You can see for a couple of days and have a good time. As low as the bar is, it’s an amazing win over And Just Like That.
