Currently, New York is the epicenter of the outbreak and it is estimated that approximately 150,000 New Yorkers may be at risk of exposure to the disease.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan have declared a public health emergency due to the monkeypox outbreak.
“We declared monkeypox a public health emergency in New York City. In recent weeks, we have moved as quickly as possible to expand the reach and access to vaccines and treatments to keep people safe.”
“This outbreak must be addressed with urgency, action and resources, both nationally and globally, and this declaration of a public health emergency reflects the gravity of the moment,” they said in a statement.
They detailed that the declaration will allow the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to issue emergency commissioner orders under the New York Health Code and modify the provisions to provide measures that help slow the spread.
“We’re also working with partners at all levels of government to get as many additional doses as possible, as quickly as possible, so we can protect New Yorkers during this growing outbreak,” they added.
Currently, New York is the epicenter of the outbreak and it is estimated that approximately 150,000 New Yorkers may be at risk of exposure to the disease.
The New York City Department of Health (DOHMH) has bolded and highlighted in its official communications that: “Anyone can get and spread monkeypox.”
Carlos Cubas, Director of Dissemination and Training of the DOHMH’s Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Program, was blunt in clarifying that it is not a sexually transmitted disease, much less an infection related exclusively to ‘homosexuals’, as it is being said.
According to official DOHMH data, as of July 28, nearly 1,300 people in the city have tested positive for orthopoxvirus (monkeypox) in the five boroughs.
These confirmed cases are on the rise. And there are likely to be far more undiagnosed infections.
One child and several women have already tested positive in the bean screenings, but even so, the official statistical reports put on the scale, very strongly, that the spread has mainly affected men.
Continuous physical contact with an infected person is the main alert point handled by the scientific community. Obviously, the sexual act is included in the ways in which people can become infected. But it is not the only one.
Now that it’s summer in New York and people tend to wear less clothing, there could be a higher level of exposure in high concentration places where people touch. The important thing is that if people feel sick, with some symptoms, they isolate themselves immediately and consult their medical provider,” said the City spokesperson.
Soon we will be expanding vaccination days. The most important message at this time is for those who feel sick or suspect they have been infected: Seek help through all available City means and isolate yourselves.”
* The monkeypox virus is most often spread through direct contact with the rash or sores of someone who has the virus.
* It can also be spread through contact with clothing, bedding, and other items used by a person with monkeypox, or by respiratory droplets which can be transmitted through prolonged face-to-face contact.
* Transmission can occur during sexual intercourse or other intimate activities, including: Oral, anal, and vaginal sex, hugging, kissing, pampering, and massage.
* At this time, it is not known if monkeypox can be spread through saliva, semen, or vaginal fluids.
*If you or your partners are sick, especially if you or they have a new or unexpected rash or sore, do not have sex or close physical contact. Avoid clubs, parties, or gatherings until you have talked with a health care provider.
If you think you have symptoms of monkeypox, call your health care provider right away. If you don’t have a provider, call 311 or look for the New York City Health Map at nyc.gov/health/map.
If you want up-to-date information or have questions about dealing with an alleged infection by this virus, write a text message with the word Monkeypox ESP to 692-692.
