Sleep No More in NYC
Attending a show is one of the most popular and fun ways to have an unforgettable time in New York City.
For lovers of plays, musical shows, comedy shows or any other type of live entertainment event, of course, there are numerous options on the emblematic Broadway, but there are also outside.
Sleep No More is an immersive theater experience inspired by Macbeth, Shakespeare’s tragedy that takes place in a warehouse in the Chelsea neighborhood at 530 West 27th Street. 30.
The story goes that the McKittrick Hotel was originally built in 1939 and was intended to be the most elegant luxury hotel of its day. Six weeks before the opening, and two days after the outbreak of World War II, the legendary hotel was boarded up and closed, until Emursive reinvented it, in collaboration with the Punchdrunk theater company.
This is not a work like any other, but it has many peculiarities that make it simply different, and it is definitely not for everyone. There are no stages here and there are no seats either. The different scenes take place simultaneously throughout its five floors and almost one hundred rooms, each one perfectly designed down to the smallest detail. As everything happens, the viewer’s curiosity becomes the common thread, making this experience unique and unrepeatable.
Depending on the time of entry, the work lasts between 2 and 3 hours. There are five arrival times for each performance ranging from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm, depending on the day of the week. After admission, guests embark on a solo journey and can stay inside the hotel, or else in its Manderley Bar which is a 1930s jazz bar where you can enjoy live music, cocktails, wine and liquors.
The first thing to do when you arrive is to check-in and put away all your belongings, including the cell phone that will be blocked. (if there is an emergency, you can always go out). The adventure begins when you are handed a mask, put in an elevator, and told that from then on you are not allowed to talk.
Over the next 3 hours, you can explore the 5 floors of the hotel at your leisure, entering rooms, looking for hiding places and touching anything you want. The only rules: you can’t talk, you can’t use your cell phone and you can’t touch the actors unless they ask you to.
You will go up and down stairs. You will walk and run. You are going to open drawers and doors. You will follow clues and stories. It will be dark. You will hear very mysterious music and sounds. You may have to cross a graveyard, or go through Lady Macbeth’s room, go through a mental asylum, or a forest, or even interact with a witch. Each one will go on their own tour where you will find actors, whom you recognize because they are the only ones who do not wear a mask. It is important that those who attend do not feel uncomfortable with the scenes of nudity since, in some parts of the play, the actors appear naked or “bloody”. Of course, anyone who needs a break, or a break can always go out to the bar and come back in.
Three types of people are in the show: those with the white masks (the audience), the actors, and those with a black mask. The latter are at strategic points, they close or open the accesses. So, when the end of the show approaches, they try to gather the spectators to the last stage.
Some suggestions:
– Tickets are sold a few months in advance. It is recommended to plan it in advance
– Bring the essentials: When you enter you will have to leave everything in the wardrobe and pay $4 for each item: coat, bag, scarf.
– You can take the Mobile, but you will not be able to use it. For those who do not want to leave it in the cloakroom, they will give you a cover that you can sling over your shoulder, but they will close it so that you cannot open it during the play. If at any time you need to use it, one option is to go to the Manderley Bar and request that the case be opened for you.
– Wear some striking piece of clothing, since visitors can be separated from their group at any time during the work. So, if you lose your companion, it will be easier to find him. Keep in mind that in Sleep No More everyone wears a mask and in the dark it’s hard to tell one person from another.
– Bring contact lenses instead of glasses if you need them. (for the mask)
