The use of the chinstrap returned to New York
The New York City Department of Health has issued a fundamental recommendation for the inhabitants of New York, is to reuse masks in public places, both indoors and outdoors when large numbers of people accumulate, at times when that the cases of covid-19 and other diseases this winter season “are experiencing unusually high simultaneous peaks.”
In four of New York City’s five boroughs and on Long Island, people should return to wearing masks indoors and on public transportation due to a surge in COVID cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC). The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island are on “orange” alert, meaning high risk levels, while Manhattan is on yellow, medium level, according to the latest CDC data. The data shows that Queens has seen a nearly 16% increase in positive cases as of Friday, while The Bronx and Brooklyn are close to 14% and Staten Island around 12%.
Long Island is experiencing a similar surge, prompting the CDC to recommend mask use in Suffolk and Nassau counties, which saw a 13% increase in positive cases.
He also urged New Yorkers to take other precautions such as getting vaccinated against covid and flu, submitting to viral tests, washing their hands repeatedly and staying home if the person is sick or with symptoms and stressed in a statement that it is “especially important” for people who are going to meet in this festive season (Christmas and New Year).
There is an increased risk of complications from covid-19 for those who have respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or flu, as well as people older than 65 and the immunocompromised. According to the health agency, cases of covid and flu are increasing nationally and in this city. Nationwide, flu hospitalizations reached the highest levels in a decade for this time of year.
“The holiday season is all about being together, as a family, and there is a way to do it safely, even when respiratory viruses in our city are unusually high,” said city health commissioner Ashwin Vasan.
Vasan said that protection should include vaccinations and boosters, as well as “common sense protections” like wearing a “high-quality” mask indoors or in crowds and staying home if you don’t feel well.
Tridemic, also known as “tripledemia,” is so worrisome that Senator Chuck Schumer on Sunday urged the federal government to be ready to help with rising cases of RSV, which is characterized by respiratory problems.
NYU Langone’s Brooklyn branch and Woodhull Medical Center in that borough reported no intensive care beds were available.
The timing of the tridemic is due in part to the lockdown during the pandemic, when there were no cases of RSV or the flu, according to Dr. Arun Chopra of NYU Langone’s Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. The lockdown probably made some people have lower immunity and be more susceptible to viral infections, the doctor explained. “There are probably more people who are more sensitive to RSV, which allowed it to spread.”
Hochul also updated New Yorkers on winterization efforts, urging people to take proven preventive measures to protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), flu and COVID-19 and reduce the patient load in local hospitals.
“New Yorkers cannot be satisfied with our fight against the triple threat of COVID-19, RSV and influenza, we have to use the resources at our disposal to come out of this winter season healthy and happy,” said Governor Hochul. “We should all celebrate the holidays by taking preventative measures, getting tested and vaccinated, and talking to a doctor if you feel sick. Let’s make sure we keep our guard against these diseases and continue to protect each other, especially our most vulnerable.
People who are at higher risk of severe illness from respiratory viruses, including those over 65, infants, those with weakened immune systems, certain underlying medical conditions, pregnant, or not up-to-date on flu shots or covid should consider additional precautions to avoid exposure to respiratory viruses, the city doctor warned.
The state of New York announced last February that it was eliminating the use of a mask indoors, although it kept it in some places such as nursing homes and in September it was the turn of public transport but it continues in force in hospitals and public clinics.
