The descent of the sphere in Times Square is one of the most famous traditions of the city and thousands of people come to witness it every December 31st.
Although before the Covid-19 pandemic, up to 100,000 people gathered in the square, the celebration of the arrival of 2022 was reduced to 15,000 attendees.
The arrival of 2023 is already a fact and it is expected that many people will be able to enjoy this show.
The first recorded New Year’s Eve celebration occurred in 1904. But the first recorded time the ball fell was in 1907.
The celebration is inspired by the “spheres of time” that were installed in England’s Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1833. They fell in the afternoon and captains could precisely set their chronometers.
Originally, the celebration also commemorated the inauguration of the new headquarters of the newspaper “The New York Times”. A fireworks display was organized in the street, but when these were prohibited, they made a great ball of iron and wood that descended to mark the end of 1907 and the beginning of 1908.
This first Times Square ball was made of iron and wood, festooned with 100 25-watt spotlights. It was 5 feet in diameter and weighed 700 pounds. Since then, 7 versions have been designed.
When the countdown arrives at 11:59 pm, from the top of the skyscraper a large geodesic sphere begins its descent while millions of voices come together to count the last seconds of the year and celebrate the beginning of a new year full of hope, challenges, changes and dreams.
At 00:00:00 the clock on the tower changes from 2022 to 2023, while the bursting of fireworks, and hundreds of thousands of colored confetti with wishes floating over the revelers will add excitement and joy to the festivities.
