TITANIC – THE EXHIBITION IN NYC
TITANIC – THE EXHIBITION IN NYC
For those who are in the Big Apple, you still can enjoy a unique and forgettable experience: the truth is that these are the last days to enjoy Titanic- The Exhibition. More precisely the last day is July 30
After visiting nearly 30 cities and more than 20 years after its creation, Titanic ,the Exhibition closes a cycle after crossing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time to paradoxically end in New York; the city to which the well-known ocean liner was heading on its fateful maiden voyage.
“While, tragically, the ship never arrived, to honor the passengers and the history of the voyage, it was deemed appropriate that New York City be the first city in the United States to host the exhibit,” organizers said.
What is this exhibition about?
Millions of people mourned the fate of the Titanic in the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. And from November 2022, New Yorkers can delve into it, through this exhibition.
Without a doubt, the famous Titanic ship has many connections to New York City, and that is that its rescued passengers arrived on the Carpathia at Pier 54 in Chelsea, whose remains still lie near Little Island. What is now the Jane Hotel in the West Village is where these passengers stayed until an official investigation was completed.
For those who wish to experience this history up close, this exhibition takes its visitors back in time, to the year 1912, when voyages to cross the Atlantic were made by sea and lasted several days, when the word America was synonymous with a distant world. and land of opportunities and when social differences were highlighted on a ship with the division of cabins into classes.
The presentation was developed out of research led by a team from Musealia, a Spanish company that creates historical exhibits displayed in Europe and the United States, and world-renowned Swedish historian Claes-Göran Wetterholm, a leading expert on the ship. Titanic. It is also presented by Fever, an events company, and Exhibition Hub, a curator, producer and distributor of major exhibitions around the world.
The exhibition describes in detail how the White Star Line company conceived the construction of the ship that was at the time the largest in the world. An audio presentation (available in different languages) allows visitors to follow the progress of her construction, view artifacts from her sister ships that were identical, and the story of the maiden voyage.
Titanic, the exhibition presents a valuable selection of around 200 objects and personal belongings of passengers and crew, such as handwritten letters or photographs, which are not only authentic and original, but the vast majority of which have never have been on display in the United States, as well as detailed life-size recreations of the ship’s interior.
One of the most special moments of the visit for visitors is finding the necklace of Kate Phillips, on whose love story James Cameron was based to film Titanic.
The story goes that Kate Phillips was a 19-year-old girl who worked in a store in the United Kingdom and fell in love with the business owner, a 47-year-old man. Both decided to go live in the United States to avoid comments about their union and traveled under false names. She managed to save herself, but he died. The necklace he gave her as a sign of love was the only thing she saved, along with a wallet and the keys to her luggage trunk.
Those three objects can be seen in the exhibit along with a photo of Phillips and his daughter, who was born 9 months after the voyage. The trunk, however, is still at the bottom of the sea.
Visitors will experience recreations from a first-class suite to a humble third-class cabin. Through the audio guides, music and sound effects are played to live the experience in a complete way. The life stories of the people who were on board are also presented.
According to the organizers of this marvelous exhibition, many of the items are from a collection owned by Musealia, while others are on loan from the private and family collections of Titanic passengers.
