Winter Season in New York

A major winter storm that stretches more than 4,000 kilometers from coast to coast of the United States is leaving much of the country stranded. Residents of the western part of the country and the plains area have been battling harsh winter conditions for days now and in the next few hours they will see even more snow and rain. As the storm moves from west to east, more regions are affected. In the midwestern states starting today there will be at least three days of ice storms and lots of snowpack. On the east coast, states such as New York, New England and Pennsylvania will begin to see heavy snowfall starting today.

The alerts include the risk of severe frost, extreme cold and snow accumulation. The northern Midwest will be hardest hit today, with cities like Minneapolis seeing as much as 20 inches of snow fall on the day on top of the two feet of snowpack they already have. According to projections, today’s snowfall could be the most intense in 30 years. But beyond the snow, there is a freeze alert between Iowa and Michigan, creating very dangerous traffic conditions. With the passing of the day, the danger is moving more towards the east coast. Severe winds are expected from Oklahoma to Missouri, and possible flooding from heavy rain in parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

On the west coast, strong winds have wreaked havoc. In California, more than 140,000 homes and businesses are without power because strong winds downed power pylons. The most severe part occurred in the northern counties of the state: San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz. In the mountains of California there is a snow accumulation of up to two feet towards the peaks.

This climate is highly unusual in states like California where winters are usually very mild. Heavy rains, snow and especially strong winds have caused at least 1,000 flights to be canceled across the country today, most of them in Minneapolis, Detroit and Denver.

But while most of the country battles a historic winter storm, the nation’s southeast sees record high temperatures for the month of February, with temperatures averaging between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius. A huge contrast to the frigid temperatures in the north of the country. It is true that in the city you can buy anything, but choosing the right pieces will mean that you do not have to go from one place to another looking for that scarf or that hat as soon as you arrive.

Throughout winter it usually snows several times, especially in January and February. Even so, the storms are usually weak, and the city does not come to a standstill. In fact, in Manhattan snowplows clear the streets so quickly that you have to go to places like Central Park to see the white city. But, due to the cold, the snow takes time to melt, and the streets are filled with slippery ice, dirty snow, deceptive puddles much deeper than they appear… For this reason, as we will tell you below, good footwear is essential.

New Yorkers aren’t scared of cold and snow, so don’t be scared of you either. With the right clothes and a coffee or hot chocolate from time to time, you can beat the thermometer and walk around New York. The most important thing is a coat with good thermal insulation. The typical cloth or fine cloth coat is not worth it, you will need a thick coat, down jacket or an anorak with thermal insulation.

Almost as important as the coat is the footwear. The most recommended are slightly high boots, which you can combine with thick socks and, if you want, leg warmers. It is very important that the sole of the shoe has grip, that it is not flat, because the streets and the stairs of the subway freeze, and you do not want to break your neck at the first change. If the boots are waterproof much better.
