World Earth Day

World Earth Day is commemorated every April 22nd

This date is officially recognized by the United Nations and aims to raise awareness about issues such as overpopulation, pollution, and the need to preserve biodiversity.

The first protest took place on April 22, 1970, led by Senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson, with the aim of establishing an environmental agency. Two thousand universities, ten thousand schools (primary and secondary), and hundreds of communities participated in this event. Social pressure yielded positive results, and the United States government created the Environmental Protection Agency and a series of laws for environmental conservation.

In 1972, the first international conference on the environment was held, the Stockholm Earth Summit, which aimed to raise awareness among world leaders about the seriousness of environmental problems.

Every year, on April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated, and this year’s theme is “The planet against plastics.”

Activists are warning about the harmful presence of plastics in the environment and are calling for a 60% reduction in their use by 2040. More than 140 countries around the world join this celebration with various activities, and New York City is no exception.

There will be conferences, events, and, in some cases, you may even receive a tree for free.
