Ghostbusters

The popular and beloved Ghostbusters saga is living a new era thanks to Hollywood’s obsession with making sequels to legendary projects that marked a before and after at the box office and in popular culture. The feature film directed by Ivan Reitman in 1984 inaugurated a science fiction universe in which ghosts, spectral entities and even demons came face to face with a group of unique scientists armed to the teeth with neutrino guns and nuclear backpacks. After the events of Ghostbusters: Beyond, the last film in the saga that presented a new cast of protagonists while bringing together old glories such as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, its sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, will soon be released .

In what order should you watch the saga (movies and series)?:

  • Ghostbusters (1984): Director: Ivan Reitman
  • The Real Ghostbusters: Direction: Will Meugniot, Richard Raynis, Masakazu Higuchi and Stan Phillips
  • Ghostbusters 2 (1989); Director: Ivan Reitman
  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021): Director: Jason Reitman
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024): Director: Gil Kenan

The new film in the saga opens in theaters on March 22 and its story takes place, of course, after what was seen in ‘Beyond’, bringing together the classic acting team again with contemporary stars led by Paul Rudd ( Ant-Man), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War) and Bill Murray (Ghostbusters). “After the events of Oklahoma, the Ghostbusters team returns to where it all began: New York! The story of the Spengler family continues with a new group of Ghostbusters.” The discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the new and old generations must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original film, the Ghostbusters return to the mythical New York fire station from their beginnings in a new installment that preserves the original humor and terror, but is “more family-friendly.” This new film from The Ghostbusters will have Gil Kenan (screenwriter of the previous installment) as director, while Ivan Reitman assumes the role of executive producer. Kenan, who was co-writer of ‘Afterlife’, which grossed more than $200 million in theaters around the world, is now making the leap to directing, while Jason Reitman, son of the saga’s creator, remains as screenwriter.

Reitman died in February 2022, but his heirs had time to present the ideas for the ‘Frozen Empire’ script.

“Seeing his enthusiasm for the continuity of this story was decisive in moving forward,” said Kenan, who says he was present “every day of filming” and “in every frame.”

According to Kenan, the family weight of the last two installments has to do with the role of Jason Reitman taking over from his father. “The theme of family lineage is very present in the story,” he noted, “there is fun, adventure and fear, but at the center of it all, there is a beating heart.”

In ‘Frozen Empire’, the Spengler family returns to the fire station where the first ghostbusters settled and will team up with some of the originals: Dan Aykroyd continues with his character of Ray Stantz and Bill Murray intervenes as Peter Venkman.

The appearance of an ancient artifact that invokes an ancestral spirit called ‘Claw’ will force them to join forces against the threat that the world is entering a new ice age.

At the same time, there is another film from this unmissable saga, but it was not successful:

  • Ghostbusters (2016) Director: Paul Feig

The female reboot failed to succeed and ended up sinking among the public and professional critics. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones starred in this failed film that works as a reboot of the saga and, therefore, can be seen independently and from scratch without any problem.

At the moment, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is available on Netflix (and Netflix with ads), so it is almost certain that the film produced by Sony Pictures will end up premiering on Netflix as its predecessor did. By not having its own streaming platform, Sony Pictures reaches agreements with other applications such as Netflix.

The release of ‘Ghostbusters: Beyond’ on other platforms is not ruled out if the Sony Pictures agreement includes it. At the moment, Sony Pictures has not confirmed a release date for ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ on Netflix or any other application, so it would not expect the film’s streaming release before summer-fall 2024.

This Monday the director and the protagonists of the new installment of the saga, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, presented the film in Madrid, bringing the glamor of Hollywood. Taking over from the iconic ‘ghostbusters’ from the first ‘The Ghostbusters’ film – which premiered in 1984 and which today has become a cult comedy – the actors have posed with the best of their smiles for the dozens of cameras that did not want to miss their presence.
