NoLita, a magical neighborhood in Manhattan
Again New York is a city to not get bored, when walking through its streets we find some surprise in every corner where there is always something new to discover or to do. Nolita is one of the neighborhoods that is fashionable in Manhattan since it is spectacular for walking, walking the streets, eating, etc.
When planning a tour of New York, without a doubt, NoLita is one of the must-see spots on the itinerary.
NoLIta or Nolita, is an exclusive neighborhood in Manhattan. Its name derives from the abbreviation of “North of Little Italy” and means in Spanish “North of Little Italy”.
Nolita was part of Little Italy in the northern sector of the Italian neighborhood of Manhattan. Over time, celebrities began to come to live on its streets, such as David Bowie, where of course you can visit the building where he lived (285 Lafayette Street).
Little by little, the neighborhood became very attractive to young people who also went in search of signature restaurants with tables on the sidewalks, cobbled streets, large trees, exclusive luxury boutiques and jewelry stores.
NoLIta can be easily reached through different subway stops. The Broadway-Lafayette St. Station on the B, D, and F Lines and the Bowery Station on the J and Z Lines are the closest alternatives.
Nolita stands out for its wide gastronomic offer: organic food, fusion, ramen, Thai, European, Israeli, and many more. It can be said that there are plans for all kinds of tastes and budgets.
Some of the suggested venues are:
JACK WITH FREDA: Natural, seasonal food. Simple, but with a lot of flavor
LOMBARDIS:. Self-proclaimed New York’s first pizzeria is the classic New York pizza.
BLACK SEED BAGELS: There are usually long lines to buy their spectacular bagels either to eat on the premises or to take away.
RAMEN LAB: Small but very attractive place for all budgets
EGG SHOP. Food made with organic ingredients. Place to eat everything with egg either for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They offer a juice that has become very famous made from kale, spinach, pineapple, mint and cucumber.
THE BUTCHER’S DAUGHTER. It is a vegetarian restaurant and favorite of many.
SEAMORE’S. It is an ideal restaurant to eat the catch of the day.
TWO HANDS COFFEE. Restaurant and bar, it is the typical place with the mystique that all those who visit NoLita look for. Local people and excellent coffee make this place an unforgettable experience.
COFFEE SELECT. Recommended option to have a good coffee but also for dinner. With an interesting wine list, it also offers fondue in a private room called Après Ski Fondue Chalet.
OSTERIA MORINI. Recommended restaurant to eat some delicious pasta on a cold winter night. Here you can find the fine Italian charm
DELICATESSEN: Famous for its spectacular fries
CAFÉ GITANE: With a Moroccan style, it offers one of the most exquisite brunches in New York.
Walking the streets of NoLita you can also find these fun activities:
STREET ART
There is a lot of street art and graffiti. A constant canvas corner is that of the L’asso pizzeria, at 192 Mott St.
GO SHOPPING
It is an ideal neighborhood to go shopping, but keeping in mind that its products are super exclusive and expensive.
There is a very popular multi-brand store called Opening Ceremony (located at 35 Howard St) where you can find super fun clothes with many Japanese-inspired models by designer Comme Des Garcon and others.
There is also the Nolita Market artisan fair located on Prince Street between Mulberry and Mott streets and opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from March to December between 10 am and 7 pm.
ELIZABETH STREET GARDEN
Undoubtedly one of the most special and unmissable spaces of NoLita. It is a beautiful garden full of sculptures and hidden between the buildings
The place has many classic sculptures and antiques and is located next to Elizabeth St Gallery, a highly recommended art gallery.
What makes this site so admirable is that it exists thanks to the collaboration of 200 volunteers. It was the residents of the neighborhood and other places in New York who in 2013 decided to reclaim this place and turn it into a sculpture garden for Nolita, Little Italy and SoHo, neighborhoods with very few parks and green areas.
These volunteers, in addition to taking care of the garden, organize concerts, gardening workshops, yoga and tai chi classes, film screenings and all for free.
Elizabeth St Garden is located on Elizabeth St, between Prince St and Spring St, stretching from Mott St to Elizabeth St.
The garden is open from Wednesday to Sunday and the hours depend on the weather and the number of volunteers available, so it is recommended to visit the website when you go there.
