Panorama of the City of New York- The city at your feet

It is said that there is only one way to see the whole city of New York and at a single glance, this is only possible by visiting the Panorama of the City of New York, the largest model of the city of skyscrapers that is in the Queens Museum .

The Panorama is a 1:1200 scale model of the five boroughs: Queens, Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island and Brooklyn, specially created for the 1964 World’s Fair. It was the most visited attraction at the fair, promoted as an ” Indoor New York Helicopter Tour. So much so that to tour it, some wagons that simulated helicopters were installed where visitors for a value of 10 cents per person got on them and, over 9 minutes, made the complete tour of New York. (Currently the model can only be seen by walking around it through walkways and balconies, but it is not possible to get close to it)

Later the model was transferred to the Queens Museum where it was also used as a tool for urban planning for the growth of the city.

The model was designed by the urban planner Robert Moses, who had extensive experience in the design of large models, and those in charge of its construction were Raymond Lester & Associates, who hired more than one hundred professionals to manufacture it. It took 3 years to build it and it is estimated that the economic cost at the time was the equivalent of about five million dollars today.

In its planning, aerial photographs were taken into account, as well as insurance maps
against fire and other materials to ensure the greatest possible precision and detail, since the contract required a margin of error of less than one percent between reality and the model.

This singular architectural work occupies about 850 square meters, which is a space equivalent to three tennis courts. The 895,000 buildings that the city contained until 1992 are distributed here (for this reason the Twin Towers are in the World Trade Center area), along with its streets, parks, and some 100 bridges represented and assembled in 273 individual sections.

Over the years, some modifications have been produced according to the changes
emerged in the city, such as Zone 0, the New Yankee Stadium, Citi Field or Brooklyn
Bridge Park.
The Manhattan borough measures 21 meters x 4 meters, the Empire State Building is 38 centimeters high, and the Statue of Liberty is only 9 centimeters high.

The materials used in its original version were wood, tin, plastic and paper, and as a special detail, it was completely painted by hand. As the years have gone by and due to the extensions and repairs that the model has undergone, more modern materials have been incorporated together with more advanced techniques such as laser-cut acrylics.

One of the most striking features of this impressive reproduction is that it has captivating details such as the small planes that take off and land at La Guardia airport. Also due to a modern lighting set installed in 2006 with 3,172 lamps, it has an artificial light cycle that simulates a full day every 15 minutes. Trees, the grounds of city parks, and the windows of Manhattan skyscrapers were painted with phosphorescent material that glows green in the night cycle.

In the spring of 2009, the Museum launched a program called “Adopt-a-Building” aimed at developing educational projects, which will also ensure the future of the model and at the same time keep it up to date. Starting at $100, you can “adopt” some real estate in the Panorama (the cheapest is an apartment) and the owners receive a deed in exchange for their donation.
Panorama is without a doubt the main attraction and the most visited of the Queens Museum located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, in Queens. In the museum, they also update their traveling exhibitions every six months. Always of the highest quality and importance for contemporary art.
