Smorgasburg NYC 2023

With the arrival of good weather in New York City, multiple activities to enjoy the outdoors begin to appear.

The truth is that until the month of October there is the possibility of enjoying one of the most delicious experiences to eat out in this great city: the Smorgasburg Market, the largest weekly outdoor food market in the United States.

Created by Jonathan Butler and Eric Demby, the founders of the Brooklyn Flea, Smorgasburg is a food market that attracts 20-30,000 people on the weekend.

It was its creators who stated in The Village Voice magazine that the word Smorgasburg does not have any particular meaning.

The idea for Smorgasburg began in 2011 as a spin-off of the Brooklyn fleas. Here the proposal was that, instead of finding furniture and clothing or fruits and vegetables, people could take only prepared food.
This concept is now a global phenomenon that exists in places like Sao Pablo, Crown Heights, Los Angeles and in Japan.

Admission is completely free and there you can find around 100 local vendors preparing as many varieties of dishes as you can imagine, both savory and sweet and different world cuisines (American, Vietnamese, Mexican, Greek, among others).

Some of the favorite dishes are: The Ramen burger, which is a burger served between two buns that are actually noodles, Barbacoa, Pop Pasta’s spaghetti donuts, lasagna, fried chicken, arepas and empanadillas, and you can also find coconuts and fruits with their straw to drink the juice, hot dogs, ice creams of many flavors, breads, beers

The Smorgasburg is quite a hipster market, and the average price of the dishes is around $10. The portions are not very large, but you can always accompany the main dish with some ice cream or cake (Bona Bona ice cream, especially the s’mores (sugar clouds, Nutella ice cream and cookie), is one of the favorites.

In order to enjoy this unique market, there are different places and the day of the week also varies:

– Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the World Trade Center. Located at Ground Zero and under the wings of the Oculus New York building,

Food can be bought and taken for a picnic nearby, for example, in Zuccotti Park, Rockefeller Park, Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park or Battery Park.

To get there you can choose the N, R or W line of the subway and stop Cortland St.

– Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 90 Kent Ave, Brooklyn. In East River State Park, a large lot facing the East River. (Here it is recommended to be located next to the East River and with the New York skyline in the background, ideal for taking a good picture)

It is just a 5-minute walk from the Bedford Subway (Line L), in the heart of the Williamsburg neighborhood. You can also get there using the NYC Ferry, a great option that arrives just a few minutes from the market, it is very cheap and gives you the chance to enjoy a pleasant walk.

– Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Prospect Park (Breeze Hill). In the Breeze Hill area, located right near Lakeside and the Lincoln Road entrance.

To get there you can use the B, Q or S line of the subway and Prospect Park stop.

When choosing your favorite dish, it will be served on a take-away plate, to later find the perfect place at one of the picnic tables or sit on the grass and take advantage of the months of good weather in New York.}

Something that should be known when going is that you can bring a bottle of water, since it can be refilled there for free. Most vendors do not accept credit card payments. Alcohol consumption is limited to an area controlled by a person who verifies identity cards.

It is important to be patient and keep in mind that the Smorgasburg is open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. At noon (12:00-14:00) it is full of visitors, and in some stalls the lines are quite long. It is recommended to avoid these hours so that the wait is not too long, although everything is worth it.

Con la llegada del buen clima en la ciudad de Nueva York, comienzan a aparecer las múltiples actividades para disfrutar al aire libre.

Lo cierto es que hasta el mes de octubre existe la posibilidad de disfrutar de una de las experiencias más deliciosas para comer afuera en esta gran ciudad: el mercado Smorgasburg, el mercado de alimentos al aire libre semanal más grande de Estados Unidos

Creado por Jonhattan Butler y Eric Demby, los fundadores de los Brooklyn Flea (pulgas de Brooklyn) Smorgasburg es un mercado gastronómico que convoca unas 20-30.000 personas durante el fin de semana.

Fueron sus creadores quienes manifestaron en la revista The Village Voice que la palabra Smorgasburg no posee ningún significado en particular.

La idea de Smorgasburg comenzó en el año 2011 como un derivado de las pulgas de Brooklyn. Aquí la propuesta era que, en lugar de encontrar muebles y ropa o frutas y verduras, las personas pudieran llevarse únicamente comida preparada.
Este concepto es ahora un fenómeno global que existe en lugares como Sao Pablo, Crown Heights, Los Ángeles y en Japón.

La entrada es completamente gratuita y allí se pueden encontrar alrededor de 100 vendedores locales preparando tantas variedades de platillos como se puedas imaginar, tanto salados como dulces y diferentes cocinas del mundo (americana, vietnamita, mexicana, griega, entre otras.

Algunos de los platos favoritos son: La Ramen burger, que es una hamburguesa servida entre dos panes que en realidad son fideos, Barbacoa, los dónuts de espaguetis de Pop Pasta, lasaña, pollo frito, arepas y empanadillas, y también se pueden encontrar cocos y frutas con su pajita para beberte el zumo, hot dogs, helados de muchos sabores, panes, cervezas

El Smorgasburg es un mercado bastante hipster, y el precio medio de los platos es de unos $10. Las raciones no son muy grandes, pero siempre se puede acompañar el plato principal de algún helado o tarta (los helados de Bona Bona, en especial el de s’mores (nubes de azúcar, helado de nutella y galleta), es uno de los favoritos.

Para poder disfrutar de este singular mercado, existen distintos lugares y también varía el día de la semana:

– viernes de las 11h30 a las 19h en el World Trade Center. Situado en la Zona Cero y bajo las alas del edificio Oculus New York,

Se puede comprar la comida y llevarla para hacer un picnic cerca, por ejemplo, en Zuccotti Park, Rockefeller Park, en Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park o en Battery Park.

Para llegar se puede optar por la línea N, R o W del metro y parada Cortland St.

– sábados de las 11h a las 18h en 90 Kent Ave, Brooklyn. En el East River State Park, un gran solar frente al río East River. (aquí se recomienda situarse a un costado del East River y con el skyline de Nueva York en el fondo, ideal para tomar una buena fotografía)

Está a solo 5 minutos andando del metro de Bedford (línea L), en pleno barrio de Williamsburg. También se puede llegar utilizando el NYC Ferry una opción genial que llega a pocos minutos del mercado, es muy económico y da la posibilidad de disfrutar de un agradable paseo.

– Domingos de las 11h a las 18h en Prospect Park (Breeze Hill). En la zona de Breeze Hill, Justo localizado cerca de Lakeside y la entrada de Lincoln Road.

Para llegar se puede utilizar la línea B, Q o S del metro y parada Prospect Park.

Al momento de escoger el plato favorito, lo servirán en un plato para llevar, para luego encontrar el sitio perfecto en una de las mesas de pícnic o también sentarse en el césped y provechar los meses de buen clima en Nueva York.}

Algo que se debe saber al momento de ir es que se puede llevar una botella de agua, ya que allí se puede rellenar de manera gratuita. La mayoría de los vendedores no acepta pagos por tarjeta de crédito. El consumo de alcohol está limitado a una zona controlada por una persona que verifica los carnets de identidad.

Es importante ir con paciencia y tener en cuenta que el Smorgasburg abre de 11:00 a 18:00. Al mediodía (12:00-14:00) se llena de visitantes,y en algunos puestos las filas son bastante largas. Se recomienda evitar estos horarios para que la espera no sea demasiado larga, aunque realmente todo vale la pena.

Es un lugar increíble para hacer una pausa, disfrutar de una excelente comida, la gente y el ambiente al aire libre. Para quienes gusten de probar cosas nuevas y sabrosas, pero también para quienes son más clásicos, definitivamente es un must al momento de visitar la Gran Manzana.
